State to open Pali Highway on Sunday as repairs close Likelike Highway
Likelike Highway will be closed from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday as Hawaiian Electric crews conduct emergency work involving the removal of a damaged, leaning utility pole and other equipment.
During those hours Sunday, Kaneohe-bound lanes of the Likelike will close just mauka of Valley View Drive in Kalihi; Honolulu-bound lanes will shut down mauka of the H-3 Freeway on-ramp.
State transportation officials will temporarily open Pali Highway that Sunday to help alleviate congestion as follows:
>> Honolulu bound contraflow will be open from 8 a.m. to noon
>> Kailua/Kaneohe bound lanes will be open from 12:15 to 4 p.m.
Hawaiian Electric said crews are removing the damaged pole from a steep portion of the Koolau mountains accessible only by helicopter, with workers hiking down to the structure. Due to accessibility issues, the highway needs to be closed. Crews will also replace two other poles and remove a section of conductors that cross over the Likelike.
