Mahalo for the image under “Back in the Day” (Star-Advertiser, April 3) of the support towers being built for the H-1 freeway back in 1965 near Kapahulu and Harding avenues.
It is a timely reminder, considering the debates over where the rail project should go. No doubt people had similar debates half a century ago about H-1, as they did more recently about H-3.
Such large-scale public infrastructure projects are always disruptive, yet once they are in place, as time passes, they may still seem inadequate, because the population keeps growing and, here in the islands especially, space is limited, especially as people crowd into urban areas.
Would critics prefer to pay a “congestion tax” on cars downtown, as New York is enacting?
