A student was transported from the Warrior Recreation Center in critical condition this morning.

An 18-year-old male student died today after collapsing while working out at the University of Hawaii at Manoa’s Warrior Recreation Center on campus.

Emergency Management Services officials said they received a call at about 11:30 a.m. about a student who had stopped breathing and arrived shortly after. The student was taken in critical condition to an area hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

His name has not been released.

“This is a terrible tragedy and our hearts go out to the student’s family and friends,” UH spokesperson Dan Meisenzahl told the Honolulu Star-Advertiser this afternoon.

Meisenzahl added that counselors were at the workout facility to offer help anyone who was there when it happened. Counselors will also be reaching out to students who knew the student.

“We encourage all members of our community to take advantage of the resources available,” Meisenzahl said.
