The University of Hawaii softball team (22-10, 3-1 Big West) opened its three-game series at Cal Poly (7-27, 1-3 Big West) with a 6-1 win at Bob Janssen Field in San Luis Obispo, Calif.
Senior pitcher Brittany Hitchcock pitched her 12th complete game of the season, allowing five hits and one walk.
The Wahine responded to a one-run deficit in the first inning by scoring three runs in the top of the second with five straight hits. UH went on to score in the fifth on a home run by junior Callee Heen and in the top of the seventh with a double by senior Heather Cameron that brought in two more runs.
The teams will conclude their series with a doubleheader today starting at 10 a.m.
Wahine water polo upset by UC Irvine
The fourth-ranked UH water polo team suffered its fourth loss of the season to eighth-ranked UC Irvine, 7-6, at the Anteater Aquatics Complex in Irvine, Calif.
UC Irvine scored its last three goals in the fourth quarter to take a 7-5 lead over the Wahine. Hawaii scored a late goal in the fourth to make it 7-6, but a missed shot by Femke Aan and a turnover later in the same quarter stopped the Wahine from tying it before the end of regulation.
Hawaii surfers move on in Australia
The remaining Hawaii surfers in the women’s Boost Mobile Pro Golf Coast and men’s Quiksilver Pro Golf Coast all moved on to the next round of competition in Australia.
Three-time WSL champion Carissa Moore and Kauai’s Malia Manuel will compete in the semifinals of the women’s competition, while John John Florence and championship tour rookie Seth Moniz will move on to the men’s quarterfinals.
UH swimmers, divers earn honors
Twenty-three University of Hawaii student-athletes were named to the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation All-Academic Team for swimming and diving on Friday.
The women’s team had 12 selections, while the men had 11. Each selection completed at least one full year of school and has a cumulative GPA of 3.00 or higher.
The only university to surpass Hawaii in the conference was BYU with 26.
