University of Pittsburgh professor Marcus Rediker, an author and activist, will present a lecture on “The Democratic Power of History from Below” at 7 p.m. May 1 in the University of Hawaii at Manoa Art Auditorium.
Rediker, who has been named the spring 2019 Dan and Maggie Inouye Distinguished Chair in Democratic Ideals at UH-Manoa, has authored and edited many books, including “The Many-Headed Hydra” and “The Amistad Rebellion.” He has been active in social justice and peace movements, such as the worldwide campaign to end the death penalty.
There will also be a free screening of the documentary, “Ghosts of Amistad: In the Footsteps of the Rebels,” based on Rediker’s book, “The Amistad Rebellion” at 7 p.m. Thursday at the Doris Duke Theatre. Rediker, who also serves as producer, will introduce the film and talk with the audience.
On April 17, Rediker will hold a public conversation with longtime collaborator and historian Peter Linebaugh called “History, the Anthropocene, and the Commons.” Linebaugh co-authored “The Many-Headed Hydra” with Rediker.
The free lecture will be held at 5:30 p.m. at the Kamehameha V Judiciary History Center.
