The idea of ending the Honolulu rail transit system at Middle Street is extremely short-sighted (“Stopping rail short might save $450 million,” Star-Advertiser, April Opens in a new tab1) Opens in a new tab.
The whole reason for the train is to move large numbers of people long distances fast, not so we can say, “Yeah, we built a train.”
The best way to save money would be to reduce the number of train stations — there are far too many in the plan even without the money problems. Reducing the number of them by a third or even half could save enough money to make it possible to run the line all the way to the University of Hawaii at Manoa.
Imagine how much traffic that could alleviate.
