Police are investigating the death of a man whose body was found by hikers in the Tantalus area over the weekend.

Positive identification is pending.

Police said hikers on the Pu’u Ohia Trail found an unresponsive man described to be in his early 30s in proximity to 4050 Tantalus Drive shortly before 5:15 p.m. Saturday.

Lt. Deena Thoemmes of the Honolulu Police Department’s Homicide Detail said the man was fully clothed with personal property near him but no form of identification was found.

Emergency Medical Services personnel responded to the scene. Police said the man could not be revived and he was pronounced dead.

Thoemmes said there are suspicious circumstances surrounding the man’s death. She declined further comment, saying the investigation is ongoing.

An autopsy is expected to be performed to determine the exact cause of death.

The case is currently classified as an unattended death.
