No. 6 Hawaii swept three opponents and had two players reach milestones on Saturday’s first day of the Big West Challenge beach volleyball tournament in Pismo Beach, Calif.
Senior All-American Emily Maglio became the fifth Rainbow Wahine to win 100 matches, the feat coming in the 5-0 victory over Cal State Northridge. Maglio and Amy Ozee defeated Daniella Molinari-Seyvion Waggoner 25-15, 21-4 at Flight 1 to open the day, making Maglio the fifth SandBow to reach the century mark.
In the second contest against Cal State Bakersfield, senior Ari Homayun became the program’s all-time career leader with her 104th victory. She and Julia Scoles defeated Heather Reed-Savanah Schroeder 21-17, 21-12 at Flight 2.
Both Maglio and Homayun added to their win totals in the 5-0 sweep of UC Davis to finish Saturday’s play. The SandBows did not drop a set in the three matches.
Hawaii (16-6), the event’s defending champion, puts its four-match winning streak on the line this morning against No. 9 Long Beach State (15-4). The 49ers, the only conference team ever to defeat the SandBows, downed No. 7 Cal Poly on Saturday 4-1.
Hawaii holds the series lead with Long Beach State 13-6 and has defeated the 49ers the past five meetings. Also today, the SandBows will face Sacramento State (1-10) and then conclude the event against the Mustangs (13-6).
Wahine finish spring play at Pepperdine
The Hawaii women’s volleyball team concluded its spring competition on Saturday with a win and a split of two other matches at the Pepperdine Spring Tournament in Malibu, Calif.
In the round-robin tournament at Firestone Fieldhouse, teams played only two sets against each other. No statistics were kept.
In the opener, Hawaii swept Division II Point Loma 25-12, 25-19. Against USC, the Wahine lost Set 1 25-19 but gained the split with a 25-22 win over the Women of Troy.
Against the host Waves, Hawaii dropped Set 1 25-17 and earned the split with a 25-23 victory in Set 2.
The Wahine have two more weeks of training this semester then resume workouts in August.
Hawaii splits in softball
The University of Hawaii softball team split a doubleheader against Long Beach State on Saturday at Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium.
In the second game, Brittany Hitchcock scattered nine hits and UH scored seven runs in the second inning of an 11-3 victory.
Madison Veldman and Callee Heen homered for the Rainbow Wahine in a game shortened to six innings.
In the first game, Hawaii allowed three runs during the fifth inning of a 5-2 loss.
Izzy Dino allowed four runs — two earned — over 4 1/3 innings and Emily Klee gave up one run in 2 2/3 innings.
The Rainbow Wahine moved to 21-10, 2-1 Big West, while the 49ers went to 14-18, 1-2.
Jordan Curry pitched a four-hitter with eight strikeouts as the Hawaii Pacific softball team beat Central Washington 6-0 on Saturday in the Tournament of Champions in Turlock, Calif.
Sierra Dias batted 3-for-3 with three runs and Mary Dungey went 2-for-3 with three RBIs for the Sharks.
In HPU’s second game of the day, the Sharks allowed five runs in the sixth inning of a 7-3 loss.
Cieana Curran went 2-for-2 with two runs for the Sharks (26-18).
In other tournament games:
Chaminade lost to No. 11 UC San Diego 7-1 and Saint Martin’s 5-4. The Silverswords dropped to 10-27.
>> Hawaii Hilo lost to Cal State Monterey Bay 2-1 and Cal State Chico 3-2. The Vulcans fell to 22-14.
UH’s Follows named All-American
Kane Follows became the first University of Hawaii swimmer to be named an All-American since 2003 after finishing seventh in the 200 backstroke on the final day of the NCAA Championships at the Lee & Joel Texas Swimming Center on Saturday in Austin, Texas.
Follows finished with a time of 1:40.14, highest for a UH swimmer in the NCAA Championships since 2000.
Additionally, Olli Kokko earned his second honorable mention All-America finish of the championships with a 15th place finish in the 200 breaststroke.
As a team, Hawaii collected 17 points, the highest point total since the 2008 squad tallied 33.
