Our out-of-control rail system should terminate at Middle Street next to the current bus terminal.
Although the cost was outrageous, it was fairly simple to plug rail posts into the open sugar cane fields on the Ewa Plain. However, as we moved into the Aiea area, we ran into some major problems. Now, if we go beyond Middle Street, who is going to pay the business owners in the already well-established downtown Honolulu — not to mention the major congestion it will cause?
Unlike the current bus stops, rail stations will take up a huge amount of real estate. Who’s going to pay for this prime real estate and the maintenance costs to run the rail? Of course, rail might help with some transportation problems, but people of Hawaii cannot afford these out-of-control costs. It’s like a homeless person wanting a Lexus. Can we afford it?
