Utah’s Saige Ka‘aha‘aina-Torres is one of two setters who have been selected to the United States Women’s Collegiate National Team that will play in Japan in May.
Ka‘aha‘aina-Torres, the 2017 Honolulu Star-Advertiser player of the year out of ‘Iolani, was a freshman on the Utes’ indoor team in the fall and is one of three Utah players selected to the 12-member squad.
Athletes were selected after participating in open tryouts March 1-3 in Colorado Springs, Colo.
The team will play six games in seven days in late May in Japan, where it will also have a series of training sessions. The U.S. team will play against Nippon Sport Science University, one of the best collegiate volleyball teams in Japan, as well as Japan’s Women’s 20 and World University Games teams.
Ka‘aha‘aina-Torres saw action in 32 matches as a freshman for Utah, splitting time at setter with another ‘Iolani alumna, junior Bailey Choy. Ka‘aha‘aina-Torres tallied 349 assists, 104 digs and 16 service aces.
Nebraska assistant coach Jaylen Reyes, a Kamehameha alumnus, will serve as one of the assistants on the team.
The U.S. Women’s Collegiate National Team is tentatively set to kick off its exhibition schedule on May 22 when it faces off against Nippon Sports Science University in Tokyo.
BASEBALL
>> Stone Parker, Kailua ’18: The Kansas freshman allowed his first run of the year in 2/3 innings of work in a 5-1 loss at Oklahoma on Friday. He recorded two scoreless outs against the Sooners in a 10-5 loss on Sunday. Parker has a 1.23 ERA and 0.99 WHIP in 10 appearances for the Jayhawks (13-10, 0-3 Big 12).
>> Wyatt Young, Mid-Pacific ’18: The Pepperdine freshman went 2-for-11 in over the weekend against Gonzaga but maintains a .337 batting average this season. Young has started at second and led off every game for the Waves (12-8, 4-2 West Coast Conference) this season, committing just three errors so far.
>> Codie Paiva, Kamehameha ’15: The Loyola Marymount senior improved to 2-2 after tossing seven scoreless innings against Pacific (Calif.) on Friday, allowing just four hits and two walks with six strikeouts. Paiva remains at the top of the pitching rotation for the Lions (14-8, 5-1 WCC).
>> Pikai Winchester, ‘Iolani ’15: The Grand Canyon senior went 1-for-11 in a weekend series against California Baptist but still has a team-high .322 average for the Antelopes (11-12, 1-2 WAC) with three home runs.
>> Keith Torres, Saint Louis ’17: The Sacramento State sophomore went 2-for-11 in a weekend series against Texas-Rio Grande as the Hornets (15-8, 2-1 WAC) took two out of three games to begin conference play.
>> Tyler Yamaguchi, Mid-Pacific ’15: The Northern Colorado senior made his season debut at first base in a weekend series against Chicago State, going 3-for-7 with five RBIs for the Bears (5-14, 2-1 WAC). Yamaguchi previously started at shortstop in every other game he played in this season.
>> Pono Anderson, Saint Louis ’15: The Texas-Arlington senior improved to 4-2 in a 4-3 win at Georgia State on Saturday, allowing two earned runs in five innings while walking one and striking out three. The Mavericks (15-9, 4-2 Sun Belt) went on to finish the three-game series sweep on Sunday.
>> Cole Cabrera, Punahou ’17: The Cal Poly sophomore led off every game in a four-game series against Saint Mary’s last weekend, going 3-for-14 as the Mustangs (9-13) split the series.
>> Noah Sills, Mid-Pacific ’15: The Lamar senior turned in his best start of the season for his first win in a 4-3 victory over Northwestern State on Friday, tossing 6 1/3 scoreless innings with no walks and eight strikeouts.
SOFTBALL
>> Jocelyn Alo, Campbell ’17: The Oklahoma sophomore went 3-for-10 in a weekend sweep over Texas Tech. Alo has played in 30 of 31 games for the No. 2 Sooners (29-2, 2-0 Big 12), hitting .383 with five home runs and 25 RBIs so far.
>> Dallas Millwood, Kamehameha ’18: The Nevada freshman went 2-for-11 in the team’s most recent series against Montana last Thursday to Saturday. Millwood is hitting .276 with three home runs and a team-high 26 RBIs for the Wolf Pack (17-12, 2-1 Mountain West).
>> Aubree Kim, Mililani ’16: The Santa Clara junior pitched three innings of relief for the Broncos (7-18) in an 8-2 loss at UC Riverside on Saturday, allowing two runs and three walks with two strikeouts.
>> Nawai Kaupe, Baldwin ’17: The Washington sophomore went 1-for-8 in a weekend series at Oregon, but made the one hit count with a solo home run in a 6-3 win on Saturday. The No. 7 Huskies (25-6, 3-3) won all three games against the Ducks.
WOMEN’S GOLF
>> Kaylee Shimizu, Baldwin ’15: The Utah Valley junior won her first collegiate event by taking home medalist honors at the Anuenue Spring Break Classic at Waikoloa Resort Kings’ Golf Course on Saturday. Shimizu shot an even-par 216 over three rounds, edging Oklahoma State’s Han-Hsuan Yu by one stroke.
MEN’S GOLF
>> Kyosuke Hara, Moanalua ’16: The Oregon State junior finished in a tie for 10th at Oregon’s Duck Invitational with a three-round total of 2-over 218 on Tuesday, helping the Beavers take the team title with a 3-under 861.
>> Shawn Lu, Moanalua ’16: The Oregon State junior closed the Duck Invitational with a 70 to jump 27 spots into a tie for 16th with a total of 4-over 220 to help the Beavers win their first team title since 2014.
MEN’S WRESTLING
>> Joshua Terao, Mid-Pacific ’14: The American senior qualified for the NCAA tournament in Pittsburgh and split his two matches on Thursday, losing to Virginia Tech’s Korbin Myers 11-3 via majority decision, then defeating Oregon State’s Devan Turner 7-2. On Friday, he lost to Iowa State’s Austin Gomez via a technical fall in his consolation bout. Terao ends his senior season at 24-7 and finishes his collegiate wrestling career at 103-41, the sixth-most wins in AU history.
