Hawaii sumo wrestler Jesse Kuhaulua, better known as Takamiyama, returns home to a hero’s welcome after winning the esteemed Emperor’s Cup in Japan. He retired from the sport in 1984.

Thousands gathered for Aloha Week’s “Palace Pageant,” where Hawaii’s royal era was depicted in song and dance on the grounds of Iolani Palace. The 1971 Aloha Week kings and queens of Oahu, Maui, Kauai, Molokai and Hawaii were presented, and former Aloha Week kings and queens were saluted in a setting that harked back to the monarchy.

Patty Worthen leads Sandy Kennedy and Donna Culpepper in an early lap of bathtub races at Hawaii Kai Marina. The eventual winner was Culpepper, representing the Kaneohe Bay Navy Boat House in a tub called My Ding-a-ling.

The new Aloha Stadium was moved into the baseball confi guration with home plate at the top of the aerial photo taken by Warren Roll, the Honolulu Star-Bulletin’s chief photographer. The 50,000-seat stadium was expected to open in time for the University of Hawaii’s Sept. 13 football opener.

A small troop of identical mannequins waited to be transformed into curly individuality while their human counterparts drew the undivided attention of hairstylists during a demonstration at the Halekulani Hotel. Hairstylists from all over the world were attending the fi ve-day Zotos International Conference, designed to introduce all facets of new hair design.
