A private utility company in California with operations in Hawaii has agreed to acquire former Navy water and wastewater systems serving Kalaeloa.
California Water Service Group announced the deal Tuesday.
The company, through local subsidiary Hawaii Water Service, plans to take over ownership and operation of the water system from an affiliate of Kalaeloa landowner and developer Hunt Cos.
Financial terms were not disclosed. The sale is subject to approval by the state Public Utilities Commission.
Hunt has a master plan to develop 4,000 new homes, retail outlets, light-industrial businesses and recreational spaces on 540 acres in Kalaeloa that it acquired from the Navy in 2009.
The property was once part of the 3,700-acre Barbers Point Naval Air Station, which was closed in 1999. Two years ago, Hunt acquired from the Navy the water and wastewater systems serving residential, commercial and industrial customers on the 3,700 acres.
California Water serves about 2 million customers in four states, including 4,500 customers in Hawaii that include people in communities of Kaanapali and Pukalani on Maui, and Waikoloa, North Kona and Kohala on Hawaii island.
