The high surf that swept through this week was nothing new for March, and one effect is familiar: the churning waves along Oahu’s North Shore.
Also familiar in this era of social-media-influenced tourism: people taking risks at the water’s edge. At Sharks Cove, one woman ventured beyond the lifeguards’ view, but they provided a rescue all the same.
It’s great to see visitors managing independently of tour guides, but perhaps social media should provide more safety warnings as well as tourist tips.
B&B discrimination case ends at last
Twelve years after Aloha Bed & Breakfast canceled a lesbian couple’s reservation, it appears that an ensuing legal dispute is pau. The U.S. Supreme Court on Monday left in place Hawaii court rulings that found the B&B’s owner violated a state anti-discrimination law. Rejected was an appeal asserting that the owner should be allowed to tether reservations to religious beliefs, including opposition to homosexuality.
Businesses that offer public accommodations should take note: Laws that protect individuals from discrimination, whether on the basis of race, gender or sexual orientation, must be observed.
