Honolulu firefighters rescued a paddler after his one-man outrigger canoe overturned in waters off of Waialua Tuesday.

Three units with 10 firefighters responded to a report of man in his 30s who fell into the water after his canoe overturned about 200 yards off of Kaiea Place and Kaimanu Place near Aweoweo Beach Park at about 11:05 a.m.

Firefighters used a rescue board and safely brought the paddler to shore, said Honolulu Fire Spokesman Capt. Scot Seguirant.

A high surf advisory remains in effect for all north and west shores on Oahu, Molokai and Kauai County as well as the north shores of Maui until 6 p.m. today.

The National Weather Service said the large northwest swell is forecast to subside today with surf dropping below advisory levels by tonight along the north and west shores of all islands.

A new northwest swell, however, is expected to roll in to most north and west shores of the smaller islands Wednesday as the current swell fades.

Surf today is estimated at 12 to 16 feet along the north and west shores of Kauai County and the north shores of Oahu, Molokai and Maui. The weather service added surf conditions on the west shores of Oahu and Molokai are estimated at 8 to 12 feet.

Forecasters urge the public to exercise caution and heed advice by ocean safety officials.
