Johan Sandell and Ivy Houser of the University of Hawaii diving team both qualified for the NCAA Championships on the final day of Zone E Championships at Northern Arizona University.
Sandell finished fourth in the platform dive with a score of 655.90 to qualify. He will compete in the NCAAs in both the platform and the 3-meter dive, which he qualified for Tuesday. Houser just made it into the NCAAs for the platform dive, finishing ninth with a score of 466.30, less than a point ahead of the 10th-place finisher.
The NCAA Championships will be held in Austin, Texas, at the University of Texas next week.
Rainbow Wahine shut out Niagara
Hawaii pitchers Izzy Dino and Brittany Hitchcock combined on a four-hit shutout in the Rainbow Wahine softball team’s 1-0 win over Niagara on Wednesday in the Bank of Hawaii Rainbow Wahine Classic.
UH senior Nicole Lopez’s inside-the-park home run in the third inning accounted for the game’s lone run. Dino (7-3) gave up three hits over five innings and Hitchcock struck out four in two innings of relief to earn her first save of the season.
The Wahine (17-7) face Southern Illinois-Edwardsville today at 6 p.m. at Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium.
Curry, Mejia earn softball honors
Hawaii Pacific senior Jordan Curry was named the PacWest Conference softball player of the week on Monday.
Curry posted a 3-1 record last week, striking out 12 batters in 26 innings. She led the Sharks with a .444 batting average for the week while driving in four runs.

Alcorn repeats as pitcher of the week
Hawaii Hilo’s Kyle Alcorn repeated as the PacWest conference baseball pitcher of the week on Monday.
The freshman from Lakewood, Calif., pitched six shutout innings against Fresno Pacific last week, allowing six strikeouts and four hits.

HPU’s Busson earns weekly PacWest honor
Hawaii Pacific women’s tennis player Elodie Busson was named the PacWest Conference Women’s Tennis Player of the Week on Tuesday.
The junior from France won all three of her singles matches at the No. 1 position, helping the fourth-ranked Sharks to wins over No. 5 Academy of Art and No. 22 UC San Diego, and was the lone victor against No. 1 Barry.
Bryan wins all-Hawaii surfing final
Gabriela Bryan of Kauai defeated Savanna Stone of Maui to defend her title in the Papara Pro Open Tahiti surfing event in Papara, Tahiti, on Tuesday.
Bryan posted scores of 8.33 and 8.00 for a total of 16.33 out of 20 in the finals, easily defeating Stone, who managed an 11.43.
Cartaino earns academic second team
Tyler Cartaino of the Chaminade men’s basketball team was named to the Google Cloud Academic All-America second team on Tuesday, as selected by members of the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).
Cartaino, an accounting major, carries a cumulative 3.836 grade point average.
Hawaii’s Masuda finishes tied for ninth
Kaci Masuda of the Hawaii women’s golf team shot a final round 73, finishing in a tie for ninth at the Dr. Donnis Thompson Invitational, helping the Rainbow Wahine finish ninth.
Masuda finished at 7-over 223, seven shots back of champion Courtney Dow of Texas A&M. The University of Texas won the team title with a 23-over 887. The ’Bows finished with a 56-over 920.
