The city’s vision for Ala Moana Regional Park’s future is still colliding with that held by the Save Ala Moana Beach Park Hui. That was evident at a Monday gathering hosted by the hui, which opposes plans for widening walkways and other improvements. (Other hosts included Friends of Kewalos, the Greater Waikiki branch of the Outdoor Circle and Malama Moana).
A prevailing worry is that the aging go-to for many locals could be transformed to cater to tourists and a nearby neighborhood dotted with luxury condos. The city will accept public comment on the second draft environmental impact statement for its master plan through March 25.
Gabbard works the night shift
Hawaii’s U.S. Rep. Tulsi Gabbard, a veteran of morning news shows, now has embraced the night spotlight, appearing Monday on “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert.”
The host pressed the presidential candidate for regrets about her controversial meeting with the Syrian dictator Bashar al-Assad, the issue from which she’s gained most of her notoriety.
No regrets; Gabbard maintained that regime- change strategies have led to more suffering.
