Daylen Calicdan ripped a three-run double to rally the Hawaii baseball team to Thursday’s dramatic 7-6 victory over Oregon at Les Murakami Stadium.
Oregon, which entered with the nation’s third-best RPI, built leads of 4-0, 6-2 and, in the eighth, 6-4.
But catcher Tyler Murray drew a walk from Christian Ciufetelli, the Ducks’ sixth pitcher. Pinch hitter Brennen Hancock then singled to center. Scotty Scott hit an opposite-field single to left to load the bases.
Calicdan then drilled a pitch past third baseman Sam Novitske and down the left-field line to give the ’Bows their first lead of the game.
Calicdan made his second consecutive start in center field as part of the shuffle triggered with Adam Fogel’s sore right shoulder. Fogel, the usual center fielder, missed his third consecutive game. His availability is in question for the remainder of this four-game series.
By winning their sixth in a row, the ’Bows improved to 8-5. The Ducks fell to 7-4, with each of their losses by two runs or fewer.
Colin Ashworth pitched two innings to earn the victory.
The ’Bows scored two runs to close to 4-2 in the sixth. Calicdan singled, stole second and continued to third when catcher Cameron Campbell’s throw skipped into center field. Shortstop Maaki Yamazaki then hit an opposite-field single to left to deliver Calicdan with the ’Bows’ first run. Yamazaki, who went 2-for-4, is hitting .583 the past six games.
Yamazaki advanced to second on shortstop Spencer Steer’s error, then scored on Ethan Lopez’s double to the warning track in center.
But the Ducks added two runs in the seventh to extend their lead to 6-2.
Steer, who went 4-for-4 with a walk, and Gabe Matthews opened with back-to-back singles. Both advanced on Jakob Goldfarb’s sacrifice. Aaron Zavala’s third hit of the game — a sharp single left — brought home Steer. Matthews scored from third when Campbell’s drag bunt refused to cross the first-base line.
The Ducks constructed a 4-0 lead against freshman starting pitcher Li‘i Pontes.
Because of the timing of the series, Pontes was pressed into making his second start of the season. The No. 1 spot in the rotation usually would go to Dylan Thomas. But UH coach Mike Trapasso opted to delay Thomas’ start until tonight, preserving a five-day rest. Thomas will open next week’s series against Cal State Bakersfield.
In the first inning, Oregon’s Jonny DeLuca grounded to deep first, then out-raced first baseman Alex Baeza to the bag. DeLuca initially was called out, but that ruling was overturned following video review. DeLuca advanced to second on Steer’s single to center.
Matthews then pulled a grounder. Second baseman Jack Kennelly’s throw to Baeza was late — and off Baeza’s glove. By the time Baeza chased down the ball, DeLuca had sprinted home from second with the game’s first run.
Zavala opened the fourth with a blooper that eluded a diving Calicdan. Zavala sprinted to second for the double. One out later, Max Foxcroft pulled a 1-2 pitch into right to extend the Ducks’ lead to 2-0.
In the fifth, Steer hit a drive past Baeza and down the right-field line for a one-out triple. One out later, Goldfarb singled to left to bring home Steer and chase Pontes. Pontes pitched 42⁄3 innings, his longest outing since five innings of relief three weeks ago against Portland. A fourth run was charged to Pontes when Goldbfarb, after stealing second, came home on Zavala’s ground single to left off reliever Cade Halemanu.
