The City Council is scheduled to consider a resolution today that demands the U.S. Navy bring its corroding fuel tanks at Red Hill to a safe standard, including a double-wall retrofit to its tanks. The metal walls of these tanks are getting dangerously close to breaking after slowly degenerating over the last 75 years.
There already have been fuel leaks at this facility with the aquifer only 100 feet below the rotting tanks. For the sake of water purity for our future generations, as well as our own present potable water supply, the Navy must act soon.
The studies projecting future fuel leaks are not a question of “if” but “when.” Let’s support City Council Chairwoman Ann Kobayashi and the Council as they press forward to make Oahu’s water safe.
