The Kakaako luxury condos were meant to be pricey — but developer Howard Hughes Corp. wasn’t expecting so many bills to be heading in its general direction. Contractors have been filing court claims for what they call unpaid work. Howard Hughes maintains it has paid and that some work was substandard, but plaintiffs charge that not all change orders were paid.

Visitors feel the aloha, even for pot

Hawaii’s fledgling medical cannabis dispensaries tallied $1.5 million in sales in December — double the January 2018 total. It’s a safe bet that the figures will continue to climb as the state’s online registration just opened for the first time to medical marijuana patients from other states. That clears the way for card-carrying visitors to pick up cannabis purchases while in the islands.

Some 25,000 in-state residents now have medical marijuana cards. Meanwhile, the botanical inventory at each of the state’s eight dispensaries is limited to 10,000 plants. Observers say that supply potential should take care of demand. For now.
