Recent allegations against the Hawaiian Humane Society contradict my first-hand knowledge of the organization. HHS, its dedicated staff and volunteers see animals at the worst point in their lives and not only rescue but rehabilitate thousands of animals every year.
My own dog, Sam, was an HHS rescue off the streets of Mililani. He was 8 years old, suffered abuse, severely underweight, had a pelvic fracture, neuropathy, rotting teeth and heartworm. Yet Sam was not euthanized due to his age or extensive medical issues. Euthanasia is performed only when necessary.
The activists have made inflammatory accusations and almost immediately began protesting, without allowing the HHS board time to assess their claims. Their tactics are causing trauma to the very animals and staff they claim to care about.
I, and many thousands of others, stand steadfast in our support of HHS and far outnumber the vocal minority. Imagine the plight of thousands of suffering animals without HHS? They deserve our deepest gratitude and support.
