Former Hawaii women’s volleyball player Reyn “Tita” Akiu has been invited to next week’s U.S. Women’s National Team tryouts at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colo.
Akiu is one of 45 liberos vying for spots in the national and collegiate national programs. It is the third time at the tryouts for Akiu.
The Kamehameha Schools graduate started all 27 matches and played in all 102 sets last season, her lone season for Hawaii.
Dino, Heen lead Rainbow Wahine to win
Izzy Dino pitched a five-hitter and Callee Heen drove in two runs as the Hawaii softball team beat Canisius 4-1 in the Hawaii Invitational on Thursday at Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium.
Dino walked one and struck out four for the Rainbow Wahine (9-2).
Heen had RBI singles in the fourth and fifth innings.
Hannah Catallo-Stooks homered for the Golden Griffins (0-1).
UH swimmers, divers win 4 events
The Hawaii swimming and diving teams won four individual events at the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Championships on Thursday.
The Rainbow Warriors and Rainbow Wahine diving teams, competing in Mission Viejo, Calif., got victories from Max Burman in the men’s 3-meter event (421.80) and Jami Stone in the women’s 1-meter event (307.25).
The swim teams, competing in La Mirada, Calif., got victories from Phoebe Hines in the women’s 500 freestyle (4:38.50) and Metin Aydin in the men’s 200 individual medley (1:44.15).
UH men’s golfers last at John A. Burns
The Hawaii men’s golf team shot a 16-over-par 304 and is 20th and last after Thursday’s first round of the John A. Burns Intercollegiate at the Wailua Golf Course.
The Rainbow Warriors’ top golfer, Justin Arcano, is in 42nd place after carding a 1-over 73.
BYU leads with a 280.
Washington State’s Daniel Kolar and BYU’s Peter Kuestare are tied for the lead at 66.
Silverswords men knock off Biola
Grant Dressler finished with 23 points and eight rebounds as the Chaminade men’s basketball team beat Biola 84-78 on Thursday in La Mirada, Calif. Tyler Cartaino and Erik Scheive each added 16 points for the Silverswords (20-5, 14-5 PacWest). The Eagles fell to 13-12, 9-10.

Chaminade women edged by Biola
Destiny Castro finished with 24 points and six assists and Hunter Liftee added 17 points, but the Chaminade women’s basketball team lost to Biola 66-63 on Thursday in La Mirada, Calif. The Silverswords fell to 5-17, 4-15 PacWest, while the Eagles improved to 10-15, 8-11.
