Despite some emotional testimony from gun control advocates Wednesday, state House lawmakers put the brakes on a proposed "red flag" law for Hawaii that is intended to keep firearms away from people who may pose a danger to themselves or others.

Thank you for your thoughtful coverage of gun-violence survivors. Existing laws are not adequate to allow for intervention that could have prevented tragedies like the murders at Xerox, Sandy Hook, Columbine, Parkland, and now Aurora, Ill.
The “red flag” bill, Senate Bill 1466, SD1, would directly address the issue (“‘Red flag’ law deferred in House as lawmaker seeks study,” Star-Advertiser, Feb. 17).
Household members and/or police officers would have the ability to identify and have guns removed from individuals exhibiting threatening behavior. The Legislature needs to pass this crucial legislation.
Hawaii is respected for our excellent common-sense gun safety laws. We can continue to lead the way for the rest of the country.
