Edrei “EJ” Arreola, 25, was sentenced to 20 years in prison Wednesday for attempting to execute a romantic rival April 18.
Circuit Court Judge Glenn Kim on Dec. 5 found Arreola guilty of attempted manslaughter, carrying or use of a firearm in the commission of a separate felony, and place to keep a pistol or revolver.
Kim sentenced Arreola to 20 years for the attempted- manslaughter offense, which carries a 15-year mandatory minimum term because Arreola used a semi-automatic firearm in the incident. He was sentenced to 20 years for carrying or use of a firearm in the commission of a separate felony and 10 years for the place to keep a pistol or revolver charge. The terms are to run concurrently.
Arreola was also ordered to pay $1,010 in restitution.
At the time of the incident, Arreola was living with his girlfriend, their infant child and the girlfriend’s family. The victim, Jarred Ferrer, who had a previous sexual relationship with Arreola’s girlfriend in middle school, was also living in the home, according to court documents.
After learning that his girlfriend and Ferrer had resumed a sexual relationship, Arreola lured Ferrer to Kalihi Valley, telling him he needed help charging his stalled car. When Ferrer arrived, Arreola approached his car and shot at him with a Glock semi-automatic handgun, striking him twice.
Arreola fled the scene but was located and arrested in the Sand Island area.
Ferrer survived the incident but suffered a major laceration to the scalp, a collapsed lung and injury to the main artery in his left arm.
Arreola had pleaded not guilty to the charges on the basis that he was suffering extreme emotional disturbance at the time of the incident.
