Kekaha fire destroys vacant structure at sugar mill, costing $50K
The Kauai Fire Department says a fire that broke out on the grounds of the old Kekaha Sugar Mill Sunday night left an unoccupied structure destroyed.
No injuries were reported, but damages were estimated at roughly $50,000 to the structure and its contents.
The fire was reported at about 8 p.m. Sunday. Firefighters from the Waimea, Hanapepe, and Lihue stations, along with Rescue 3 personnel and the on-duty Battalion Chief worked together to contain the blaze along Kekaha Road. Police closed a portion of Kekaha Road for about three hours.
Once on scene, firefighters moved a collapsed metal roof to address multiple fires hidden underneath. They were able to contain the blaze within a half-hour, and successfully prevented flames from spreading to other structures or brush areas nearby.
The fire was extinguished at about 9 p.m., and the scene was cleared by 11:30 p.m., the fire department said.
Inspectors and Kauai police continue to investigate the cause of the fire. Anyone with information should call Kauai Police Dispatch at 241-1711. Those wishing to remain anonymous can call Crime Stoppers Kauai at 246-8300.
