University of Hawaii tennis player Andre Ilagan was named the Big West athlete of the week on Wednesday, the first-such honor of his career.
The freshman out of Farrington went 3-0 in singles and 2-1 in doubles at the UNLV Tournament in Las Vegas last week. He earned a win in No. 2 singles against Weber State, then moved up to No. 1 singles in wins against UC Riverside and UNLV. He and partner Lucas Labrunie were victorious in No. 2 doubles against Weber State, and again in No. 1 doubles against UC Riverside.
HPU women’s win streak comes to end
The Hawaii Pacific women’s basketball team saw its nine-game win streak come to a close on Wednesday night, falling 91-86 to Dominican at Blaisdell Arena.
Marisa Mondave led the Penguins (17-3, 14-2 PacWest) with 30 points and 11 rebounds and had plenty of help from teammates Natalie Diaz (28 points) and Alanna Scott (27). Amy Baum led HPU (16-6, 14-2) with 27 points, one of five Sharks to score in double figures.
HPU men knock off Dominican
Ronald Blain had 14 points, leading HPU to a 64-57 win over Dominican on Wednesday at Blaisdell Arena.
The win snapped a four-game losing streak for the Sharks (6-15, 3-13 PacWest). Darnell Bettis added 11 points and nine rebounds for HPU.
Sam Averbuck had a game-high 15 points to lead the Penguins (7-15, 3-13).
