The Hawaii Pacific baseball team edged, then routed Howard Payne (Texas) in a doubleheader Sunday at Hans L’Orange Park.
In the first game, Micah Layosa hit a tie-breaking, two-run double in the sixth inning as the Sharks prevailed 6-5.
RJ Roberts hit a home run in the seventh to get the Yellowjackets within one run.
Cole Mayeshiro allowed one run over four innings of relief for the victory.
In the second game, HPU had an 11-run first inning and a nine-run fourth en route to a 20-4, seven-inning victory.
Gabriel Garcia, Kiefer Morgan and Jalen Bustos each drove in two runs for the Sharks, who drew 11 walks.
Shane Adams allowed one run over 42⁄3 innings for the victory.
HPU improved to 5-0, while Howard Payne fell to 0-5.
Hawaii surfers win heats at Pipeline
Hawaii’s Tyler Newton, Koa Smith, Noah Beschen, Makuakai Rothman and Anthony Walsh won their third-round heats at the Volcom Pipe Pro on Sunday at the Banzai Pipeline on Oahu’s North Shore.
Three third-round heats were not completed.
Earlier Sunday, Walsh and Kalani David claimed their second-round heats.
UH Hilo softball falls to San Francisco State
The Hawaii Hilo softball team dropped its final game of the Desert Stinger Tournament, falling to San Francisco State 7-3 on Sunday in Las Vegas.
Kimberly Olivas’ three-run double put the Vulcans ahead 3-2 in the second inning.
The Vulcans, who committed five errors, fell to 1-2. The Gators improved to 3-0.
UH water polo team sinks UC San Diego
Irene Gonzalez scored three goals as the No. 5 University of Hawaii water polo team beat No. 21 UC San Diego 10-7 on Sunday in La Jolla, Calif.
Elyse Lemay-Lavoie, Femke Aan and Carmen Baringo each added two goals for the Rainbow Wahine (7-1).
The Tritons fell to 1-4.
