My husband and I moved to Kakaako in order to enjoy the amenities of urban life — particularly the opportunity to leave our car in the garage and walk everywhere as often as possible.
We watched our urban hub grow but often wondered at the built-in dangers for pedestrians left to the mercy of drivers coming out of garages in residential and commercial buildings on thoroughfares designated for people out for a walk or heading for the many new restaurants and shops springing up in the area.
Why not create a full pedestrian zone closed to vehicular traffic in the busiest areas, including Auahi, Kamakee and Queen streets? For a successful model in a tropical resort town, look to Brisbane.
