NIGHT LIGHT: The Blue Pond, a popular tourist spot in Biei, Hokkaido, is lit with LED lights, creating a mystical contrast between its sky-blue water and withered white larch trees. The artificial pond was created in 1989 during work to prevent erosion on Mt. Tokachi. Aluminum components in the water scatter sunlight to give the pond its blue hue.
