The Hawaii women’s basketball team rediscovered its offensive touch to get back in the Big West hunt.
Coming off their lowest point output since 1982, the Rainbow Wahine rebounded for a 71-54 win over Cal Poly in San Luis Obispo, Calif., on Thursday night.
UH (6-11, 2-2 Big West) sank 10 3-pointers in its first game since scoring just 29 in a 20-point home loss to Cal State Northridge last week. That was the fifth-lowest total in program history.
“We’re a much better team when we stay composed and just get our feet set,” coach Laura Beeman said in a postgame phone interview. “So it was very obvious tonight.”
Guard Courtney Middap scored 13 of her 15 points in the first half and center Lauren Rewers scored all of her eight points before intermission to get UH going. Point guard Tia Kanoa (14 points, seven assists and seven rebounds) and forward Kenna Woodfolk (14 points and five rebounds) helped close it out.
“They were embarrassed. We all were,” Beeman said of the Northridge game and the talks she had with her players since. “And so we’ve had a lot of conversations about what it takes in games and on the practice court. … The biggest thing is they know as a coaching staff we’re going to hold them accountable for what they revealed to us. It’s (UH’s win over defending champ UC) Davis. It’s tonight. And now they’re going to be held to that standard all the time.”
The Wahine took control in the second quarter and led by 11 at halftime on Lahni Salanoa’s banked 3 to beat the buzzer. That shot tied Salanoa with Crystal Lee for 10th on the UH all-time 3s list with 90 triples. Salanoa’s twin sister, Leah, is not far behind at 85.
UH built the lead to 13 going into the fourth thanks to a strong quarter from Woodfolk and Kanoa and grew the lead down the stretch.
Cal Poly (4-12, 1-4) committed 20 turnovers to UH’s 14. Guard Alli Hallberg scored a game-high 19 points for the hosts.
UH continues play at UC Santa Barbara at 2 p.m. Saturday.
