The Hawaii Pacific women’s basketball team dominated defensively in a 55-27 victory over Notre Dame de Namur on Thursday in Belmont, Calif.
The Sharks (12-5, 10-1 PacWest) held the Argonauts (4-12, 3-9) to 7-for-32 shooting from the field and forced 24 turnovers.
Alysha Marcucci scored 13 points and Breanna Mackenzie added 12 for HPU, which led 25-2 with 4:34 remaining in the first half.

Alyssa Movchan added 12 points for the Vulcans (4-11, 1-10 PacWest).

Sharks men snap 6-game losing streak
Jonathan Janssen, Neema Namdar and Tavon Tarpley each scored 11 points as the Hawaii Pacific men’s basketball team snapped a six-game losing streak with an 81-57 win over Notre Dame de Namur on Thursday in Belmont, Calif.
The Sharks (5-11, 2-10 PacWest) held a 40-18 rebounding advantage.
Val Wilson and Neil Green each scored 14 points for the Argonauts (0-18, 0-12).

The Vulcans (7-8, 5-6 PacWest) were outscored 50-30 in the second half.

UHH’s Kaleikini is preseason player of year
Hawaii Hilo utility player Brinell Kaleikini was named the preseason PacWest softball player of the year, the conference announced Thursday.
Kaleikini, a junior, played five positions for the Vulcans last season. The Moanalua graduate hit .361 with 13 doubles, two triples, six home runs and 39 RBIs.
Hawaii Hilo was picked to finish fourth, Hawaii Pacific was sixth and Chaminade was tied for seventh in the 10-team league. Concordia was voted to repeat as conference champion.
Concordia’s Callie Nunes was selected as the preseason pitcher of the year.
UH diver Sandell honored by MPSF
University of Hawaii senior Johan Sandell was named MPSF male athlete of the week, the conference announced Wednesday.
Sandell, of Huddinge, Sweden, won the platform diving event at the UCLA Bruin Diving Invitational over the weekend. He also placed fifth in the 3-meter and eighth in the 1-meter.
Young claims all-Hawaii final at Sunset
Cody Young won an all-Hawaii four-man final at the Sunset Open surfing event Thursday at Sunset Beach.
Young finished with a score of 17.77 in the WSL qualifying series 1,000 event. Jack Robinson (16.83) was second, Billy Kemper (14.13) finished third and Kiron Jabour (13.77) placed fourth.
