Families can enjoy Roald Dahl’s classic adventure, “James and the Giant Peach,” in a vibrant adaptation presented by Hawaii Theatre Center Education and the Pacific Academy of Performing Arts Feb. 2-3 at Hawaii Theatre.
The performance by local youth, a culmination of the spring theater-education program, is under the instruction and direction of J.P. Tai and the drama education professionals at the academy.
“There are many magical aspects to the show, especially with the giant peach and the way it grows,” Tai said. “Audiences will enjoy the vivid colors in the costumes and puppets. Overall, the music captures the fun and whimsy of the tale.”
The production follows James on an epic adventure, which starts when he’s sent by his aunts to chop down their old fruit tree. James discovers a magic potion that results in — you guessed it — a giant peach.
James finds himself inside the peach, along with other larger-than-life personalities, and plenty of strife after the peach falls from the tree and rolls into the sea. Thanks to James’ wit and creativity, the group learns to live and work together. While the ocean journey is a success, it takes a twist when they land on the Empire State Building.
“This wholesome story will whisk families away to a hilarious and fanciful world where they can laugh and learn together,” Tai said.
