Moanalua graduate John Oda weathered strong winds to post a round of 2-under-par 70 on Tuesday and enters the final round of the Web.com Tour’s Bahamas Great Abaco Classic tied for the lead at 8 under.
Oda closed Tuesday’s play with a 54-hole total of 208, along with Willy Wilcox and Erik Compton at The Abaco Club. Oda tied for fourth at the Bahamas Great Exuma Classic last week and moved into contention again on Tuesday with a solid back nine highlighted by birdies at the par-4 15th hole and the par-5 18th. Wilcox finished the day at 3-under 69 and Compton had a 2-over 74.
Chaminade men’s hoops ranked 20th
After splitting a pair of games last week, the Chaminade men’s basketball team dropped from 19th to 20th in the National Association of Basketball Coaches Division II Top 25 poll, released on Tuesday.
It marks the fifth straight week the Silverswords (14-3 overall, 8-3 Pacific West Conference) have been ranked nationally.
The first official NCAA West Region rankings will be released on Feb. 13. The region rankings determine the eight schools from each of the eight regions that receive NCAA D-II tournament bids.
Chaminade returns to the hardwood on Monday against Azusa Pacific. Tipoff is set for 7:30 p.m. at McCabe Gym.
Kauai’s Frye with top score at Sunset Pro
Kauai’s Cole Frye turned in the day’s top performance as the World Surf League’s Sunset Pro (a men’s Qualifying Series 1,000 level event) wrapped up Day 1 on Tuesday at Sunset Beach.
Frye scored a 16.10 (out of a possible 20) to turn in the day’s top heat total and went on to catch a wave in the waning seconds of his second round heat and move on.
The event continues today, surf permitting.
