Hawaii men’s volleyball opens with sweep of NJIT
Junior hitter Colton Cowell put down a career-high 12 kills and senior hitter Stijn van Tilburg added 11 in two sets as No. 4 Hawaii swept New Jersey Institute of Technology 25-17, 25-11, 25-13 in tonight’s second match of the Hawaiian Airlines Classic at the Stan Sheriff Center.
Van Tilburg passed Brian Poppinga (1986-90, 1,061) to move into 16th place in the program’s record books with 1,070. He needs seven to pass Steven Hunt (2009-12, 1,076) for 15th.
The Rainbow Warriors (1-0), winning their sixth straight season opener, also had 12 aces. Senior setter Joe Worsley had five and senior middle Dalton Solbrig had a career-high four.
Worsley brothers Joe (7) and Gage (6), a sophomore libero, combined for 13 of Hawaii’s 22 digs.
NJIT (0-3) got 11 kills from sophomore opposite Alvaro Gimeno.
Hawaii takes on Concordia-Irvine (0-4) in Friday’s 7 p.m. match. In today’s tournament opener, the Eagles were swept by USC, 25-14, 25-18, 25-14.
