Southwest Airlines didn’t begin selling tickets to Hawaii last year like it planned, but the Dallas-based carrier said in a letter filed with the U.S. Department of Transportation that it hopes to begin service to the islands during the first quarter of this year.
The Dallas-based carrier said in a letter dated Dec. 20 that it won’t seek a second route between Tampa, Fla., and Havana to instead focus on getting its Hawaii service started.
“Southwest has decided to focus its expansion efforts on inaugurating service to Hawaii, where we hope to begin operations the first quarter 2019, subject to the recept of required authorizations from the FAA (Federal Aviation Administration),” the airline wrote.

Nagamine Okawa Engineers Inc. has promoted Colin Kodama and Jonathan Okunaga to associate from project engineer, both will oversee project management and business development as part of their promotions. Kodama’s six years experience in structural engineering include design for commercial, educational and institutional facilities; and bridge inspection, repair and renovation. Okunaga’s seven years experience in structural engineering include design for military facilities, educational and institutional facilities; load ratings for highway bridges; antiterrorism/force protection; and pier and wharf load capacity analysis.
HDS Foundation has named Dr. Gavin Uchida program administrator, serving as the foundation’s liaison with the state Department of Health, as well as nonprofit organizations in the promotion of oral health initiatives. Dr. Uchida is founder and a pediatric dentist of Blue Whale Children’s Dentistry of Hawaii and was previously dental director for the state Department of Health.
