The state Health Department has issued a brown water advisory for White Plains Beach on the leeward side of Oahu due to rain resulting in stormwater runoff entering coastal waters.

A brown water advisory issued on New Year’s Eve also remains in effect for D.T. Fleming Beach Park on Maui, in addition to several others issued last week for several beaches on Kauai, including Hanalei Bay.

The public is advised to stay out of flood waters and storm water runoff due to possible overflowing cesspools, sewer, manholes, pesticides, animal fecal matter, dead animals, pathogens, chemicals and associated flood debris, state officials said.

While not all coastal areas may be impacted by runoff, the public is advised to stay out if the water is brown, state health officials said. In addition, the public should continue to practice good personal hygiene and follow up with a primary care physician with any health concerns.
