66,000 gallons of wastewater spilled into ocean on Big Island

Warning signs have been posted after a wastewater spill today in Pepeekeo.

The state Department of Health is advising the public today to stay out of the water near Pepeekeo on Hawaii island after wastewater was discharge from Kulaimano Wastewater Treatment Plant.

An estimated 66,000 gallons of wastewater discharged into coastal waters fronting Pepeekeo town on the Big Island’s east side, the Health Department said this afternoon.

The discharged has stopped and warning signs have been posted along the coastline.

The public is advised to stay out of the water until the signs have been taken down.
