No tsunami threat to Hawaii from magnitude-7.2 quake near Philippines
A 7.2-magnitude earthquake occurred tonight in the Philippines but did not generate a tsunami threat for Hawaii, the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center in Ewa Beach said.
A tsunami threat exists for parts of the Pacific closer to the earthquake, which occurred at 5:39 p.m. Hawaii time.
The U.S. Geological Survey said the quake was magnitude-6.9 and centered about 37 miles below the surface. The earthquake was near Mindanao.
