A white Christmas in Hawaii is not just a dream. Atop Mauna Kea it’s a reality, with snow falling Christmas Day and flurries forecast for throughout the night.
Mauna Kea rangers closed the road to the summit due to “steady snowfall, icy roads, high humidity and below freezing temperatures,” according to an update posted to the Mauna Kea Weather Station’s website at 4:59 p.m. Tuesday.
The road was closed to the public at the Visitor Information Station.
Warnings for fog, ice and a chance for convection and flurries were issued Christmas Eve for Mauna Kea observatories.
