Police are searching for a suspect today after a 31-year-old woman was seriously injured during a shooting in a rural Kahaluu subdivision.

The shooting, which occurred around 12:50 p.m. near the intersection of Waihee Place and Waihee Road, stemmed from a domestic violence incident and the suspect fled after the shooting, police said. He remains at large tonight. Officers opened a second-degree attempted murder investigation.

Police said a bullet grazed the woman’s head.

Firefighters responded to treat the woman and turned her over to paramedics at about 1:15 p.m., said Honolulu Fire Department Capt. Scot Seguirant. An Emergency Medical Services report said paramedics took the woman to a hospital in serious condition.

Shortly after the incident, police issued an all-points bulletin for the suspect, saying he was seen driving a silver BMW 3-series sedan toward town on the H-3 freeway, according to police dispatch communications. The bulletin said the suspect allegedly used a small handgun in the shooting.

Residents in the quiet neighborhood said they weren’t aware anything had happened until after they heard emergency vehicles arrive. They said the property where the shooting occurred, which was at the bottom of a steep driveway, is made up of rental units and sits next to a ranch.

Police remained at the scene for several hours after the incident and wouldn’t allow reporters near crime scene tape at the entrance to the driveway.
