WAILUKU >> A Maui judge handed down a life sentence to a man who slit his estranged wife’s throat in a supermarket and injured two men who tried to help her.
Circuit Court Judge Peter Cahill called the vicious murder “an act of terrorism” and said if it were up to him, Stephen Schmidt, 48, would serve at least 100 years in prison, the Maui News reported. Schmidt pleaded no contest to the second-degree murder of Kehau Farias, 24, and to attacking the two men. The victim, a child care worker, obtained a protective order against Schmidt six days before she was killed inside the Kehalani Foodland on April 19, 2016.
