Keiki dancing hula as auntie strums her ukulele on the beach, “broke da mouth” haupia cake and a trip downtown to see Christmas sights are among the island-style holiday images found in two new children’s books — “Hawaiian Christmas Day” and “The Hawaiian Christmas Mouse” — worth adding to your home library to enjoy through the years.
In “Hawaiian Christmas Day,” author and former Aiea resident Beth Greenway captures an idyllic local Christmas, including a beach day with the ohana, local treats and Santa’s arrival in a canoe.

“The dolphins splash, the turtles snooze around the sparkling bay. A salty seashell tops the tree, a tropic Christmas Day,” Greenway writes in sing-song rhyme. Fun illustrations by Jamie Meckel Tablason add to the charm of the book, which is ideal for children ages 4-8 years old.
“The Hawaiian Christmas Mouse” follows the little title character’s adventures leading up to the big day. Along the way, he helps tutu cook, finds himself with “choke work” and enjoys crackseed treats.
The book, inspired by a catchy holiday song by songwriter Laura-May Azpiazu Taufaasau, includes a CD so children (and parents, too) can sing along while reading. The original artwork, which accentuates the sweet personality of the rhyming story, was created by local artist and Hank’s Cafe Honolulu owner Hank Taufaasau. “The Hawaiian Christmas Mouse” has a nostalgic feel, making it perfect for all ages.
