University of Hawaii women’s basketball team tops UNLV in overtime
The Hawaii women’s basketball team advanced to the championship game of the Duel in the Desert tournament in Las Vegas, Nev., with a 66-61 overtime victory over host University of Nevada-Las Vegas at Cox Pavilion today.
University of Hawaii (4-7) won its third straight game despite squandering an 18-point lead, including getting outscored 17-6 in the fourth quarter and trailing in the final seconds of regulation.
Point guard Tia Kanoa tied it up at 55 with a layup with under six seconds left to send it to the extra period.
Guard Jadynn Alexander had the go-ahead 3 on UH’s first possession of overtime and had five points in the frame to help the Wahine overcome 20 turnovers, including 12 steals by the Rebels. Forward Kenna Woodfolk (19 points, nine rebounds) had two big late boards and hit four straight free throws to seal the outcome.
UNLV (1-9) was led by Nikki Wheatley with 19 points and 13 rebounds.
On Friday, UH will face the winner of Thursday’s game between Utah (9-0) or Florida (3-7).
