Twentieth-ranked Chaminade (10-0) remained unbeaten Tuesday with a 70-64 upset of No. 7 UC San Diego (10-2) in the championship game of the Hoops in Hawaii D2 Power Invitational at the Hawaii Convention Center.
Reigning PacWest player of the week Erik Scheive led the Silverswords with 18 points, while teammate Nick Anderson added 18 and current PacWest defender of the week Grant Dressler chipped in 17 points along with six rebounds and six assists.
Earlier, the fifth-place game between No. 11 Southern Nazarene (Okla.) and Hawaii Pacific was halted with 6:52 left to play in the first half at a timeout when an HPU player collapsed on the bench. He was attended to by the HPU training staff and the Convention Center medical staff until emergency crews arrived.
It was at that point the game was called. The third-place game between Dallas Baptist and Western Oregon was also canceled.
The Sharks return to the floor on Dec. 28, when they take on TCU in a 2 p.m. exhibition game at St. Francis School. Chaminade’s next game is on the road on New Year’s Eve against PacWest foe Fresno Pacific.
>> In a fifth-place semifinal on Monday, Hawaii Pacific’s Ronald Blain scored 21 points in a 90-83 overtime victory over Emmanuel (Ga.) at the Hawaii Convention Center. Down two with 2.2 seconds, Kendrick Colvin converted two free throws to send the game into the extra period.
HPU women’s hoopsters awarded
The Hawaii Pacific women’s basketball program received two PacWest conference awards as Samantha Lambrigtsen was selected as the player of the week and Amy Baum took home defender of the week honors on Monday.
Lambrigtsen, a senior guard, helped the Sharks to three wins last week, averaging 18 points and five rebounds per game.
Baum, a freshman guard, led the Sharks last week with 7.7 rebounds per game, while recording 3.3 steals and 1.7 blocks per game. In those three victories, she helped HPU hold its opponents to .341 (58-for-170) shooting from the floor and forced 18.6 turnovers a game.
HPU is one of three PacWest teams still unbeaten in conference play. The Sharks (6-4 overall, 4-0 PacWest) return to the court on Dec. 31 at Academy of Art, which will be the first of a three-game Northern California road trip for HPU.
