Top Las Vegas shows go dark for the holidays

ASSOCIATED PRESS / 2017

Fireworks explode over the Las Vegas Strip during a New Year’s celebration.

During December, many Las Vegas shows go “dark” to allow cast members to take holiday vacations. If you’re visiting between now and New Year’s and have your heart set on seeing a particular show, make sure to check that there will be performances during your dates.

The dark days for the major productions are listed below; most are also dark Dec. 31:

>> Bally’s “Bronx Wanderers,” Dec. 30 and Wayne Newton, Friday, Saturday and Dec. 19 and 24-26

>> Bellagio’s “O,” Dec. 27

>> Cosmopolitan’s “Opium,” Dec. 24

>> Excalibur’s “Thunder From Down Under,” Dec. 24-25

>> Flamingo’s Donny & Marie, Today-Dec. 30 and “Legends in Concert,” through Dec. 20 and Dec. 25

>> Harrah’s Mac King, Dec. 25; Righteous Brothers, through Dec. 26 and “Tenors of Rock,” Dec. 23 and 24

>> Luxor’s Carrot Top, Dec. 23-24

>> Mirage’s “Beatles LOVE,” today, Monday and Dec. 23-24 and 30

>> Plaza’s “A Mob Story,” through Dec. 25

>> Rio’s Penn & Teller, through Dec. 20 and “WOW” today

>> TI’s “Mystere,” Saturday-Dec. 30

>> Venetian’s “Human Nature,” Dec. 24-26

>> Westgate’s George Wallace, Tuesday-Saturday and Dec. 25-26 and “Sexxy,” Wednesday-Saturday and “Magic of Jen Kramer,” Wednesday-Saturday

Holiday nog: For the 16th straight year, Ellis Island is serving its homemade egg nog (contains alcohol). Get it at the bar for the same price as last year: $6 per glass and $30 per bottle.

New buffet: Treasure Island’s former Dishes Buffet has reopened as the Corner Market Buffet after a major renovation and retooling to the tune of nearly $4 million. The room has been expanded and completely remodeled, with a larger and much more varied selection than Dishes. Plus parking at TI is free.

Question: Is it still possible to get rooms for New Year’s Eve?

Answer: Yes. In a check of 92 hotel-casinos late last month, 79 had rooms available. The lowest-priced room for New Year’s Eve was at Eastside Cannery, with one of the lowest rates in years at $42. Other good deals were found in two-night packages at Golden Gate for $398, the D for $458, and Treasure Island for $498. The most expensive rooms were at the Waldorf Astoria (formerly Mandarin Oriental) for $926.
