Maui police investigate attempted kidnapping of 11-year-old girl

Maui police are investigating an attempted kidnapping that occurred near Maui Waena Intermediate School in Kahului.

Sometime between 3:45 and 4 p.m. Tuesday, an 11-year-old female student was walking home on Ekolu Street when a male suspect in a tan four-door sedan approached her, according to a news release from the Maui Police Department.

The suspect pulled his vehicle next to the girl near the intersection of Kaulu Place. Police said he opened the front passenger door and asked her if she needed a ride.

When the girl refused, the suspect reached over and allegedly attempted to pull her into the vehicle.

Police said the female broke away. She did not sustain any injuries.

The suspect, who fled toward Onehee Avenue, is described as about 50 to 60 years old, 5 feet 6 inches to 5 feet 8 inches tall and approximately 180 pounds. He has a slim build and dark complexion.

Police said the suspect also has a tribal tattoo on one of his hands and a vertical scar on his upper right cheek.

He was last seen wearing a black long-sleeve shirt, black jeans, black slippers and diamond stud earrings in both ears.

The vehicle operated by the suspect is lowered, possibly a 1990s model Honda Civic. It has a shattered rear windshield and a dent on the front passenger door. Police said the sedan’s rear windows are tinted, and the front windows are not tinted.

Anyone with information on the suspect and vehicle is asked to call police at 244-6400 or Detective Kyle Nagano at 244-6438.
