Georgia Tech head coach and former Hawaii offensive coordinator Paul Johnson reportedly to retire

The former Hawaii offensive coordinator is expected to announce his retirement after 11 years as head football coach at Georgia Tech, multiple media outlets are reporting.

Former Hawaii offensive coordinator Paul Johnson is expected to announce his retirement after 11 years as head football coach at Georgia Tech, multiple media outlets are reporting.

Johnson was the Rainbow Warriors’ offensive coordinator under Bob Wagner from 1987 through 1994, installing a spread offense that helped UH to its first two NCAA bowl games (1989 and ‘92) and first conference championship (1992).

The 61-year old Johnson is 82-59 at Georgia Tech and 189-98 overall as a head coach including stops at Navy and Georgia Southern.

Johnson won one Atlantic Coast Conference championship at Georgia Tech ( (2009) and posted first or second place finishes in his division for seven of his 11 seasons with the Yellow Jackets.

Tech is 7-5 this season and will be headed to his ninth bowl in Johnson’s tenure.

At UH and later other stops he mentored several former players an assistants who went on to become head coaches including Kenny Niumatalolo (Navy) and Jeff Monken (Army).

Monken’s name has surfaced in speculation about possible successors.
