Reality check here: Going to a $15 minimum wage is a little ridiculous (“Lawmakers noncommittal on minimum wage hike,” Star-Advertiser, Nov. 26).
Salaries normally reflect the complexity of the work. There are complex jobs requiring significant training and experience that pay just over $15. The governor wants someone making a burger to earn the same or close to them?
I think most would agree the minimum wage is out of tune with reality as well. But a jump from $10.10 to $15 is not reality.
Hopefully, our legislators will use common sense and add reality to efforts to increase the minimum wage — perhaps to $13 for a start.
Striking hotel workers should wake up and face reality, too. “One job should be enough” is not reality. Cleaning rooms and serving meals are not very complex or difficult jobs. They might have to work two jobs until they get trained and can achieve great management positions in the hotel or food industry.
