Media reports about the Lanai Cat Sanctuary and Keoni Vaughn’s accomplishments showed Hawaii that there is a humane, realistic and sustainable answer to deal with the feral cat population.
A sanctuary on Oahu and other islands modeled after Vaughn’s is possible. Cat sanctuaries are really popular nowadays worldwide, and a small fee from visitors could make a facility a self-sustaining attraction.
In the spirit of philanthropy, if just one of Hawaii’s very wealthy residents or businesses who love animals purchased four or five acres in rural Oahu, and constructed a modern facility modeled after Vaughn’s, it could provide a humane solution.
Hawaii has many problems. This could be an honorable way to alleviate one of them, and show our animal friends that we can also be theirs. It just would take one big donation from someone with a really big heart. The animals get to live, and the donation would provide a direly needed way to address the problem of abandoned animals.
