Stanford women’s basketball beats Hawaii; Russell Wilson’s sister, Anna, hospitalized

Hawaii guard Julissa Tago fought for position on a rebound with Stanford forward Lacie Hull, left, and guard Anna Wilson during the first half.

Stanford guard Anna Wilson was taken from the Stan Sheriff Center to a hospital on a stretcher about 30 minutes after the No. 8 Cardinal defeated the Hawaii women’s basketball team 81-59 Sunday afternoon.

Wilson, the younger sister of Seattle Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson, was cleared to leave the hospital and was to accompany the team on its flight back to California Sunday night, according to Stanford on Twitter.

The 5-foot-9 junior collapsed by the UH bench with 48.2 seconds left in the one-sided game on the final day of the four-team Rainbow Wahine Showdown. Her feet apparently became tangled and she fell into the bench seats with force.

“Our No. 1 priority is Anna Wilson’s health,” Stanford coach Tara VanDerveer said. “It’s just unfortunate, the last minute of the game, people playing hard, and there’s nothing involved except an accident. She kind of got tripped up a little bit and fell back into the chairs. So we’re all very concerned about her health and pray for her to be healthy. She’s a great young lady and, our team, it kind of dampens the three games that we played and obviously the game today against Hawaii.”

She remained down without moving, attended by team trainers as the Sheriff crowd was hushed and Wahine players and coaches cleared out from the bench area. After about five minutes, game officials called the outcome with the 48.2 seconds still on the clock.

“You never want a player to get injured,” UH coach Laura Beeman said. “I don’t care how the tournament ends, I don’t care how that game ended. It was the right call to call the game. Obviously we’re concerned for her safety. That’s all I can say. We’re just keeping her in our thoughts and prayers and hope that she’s all right.”

Within two hours after the game, the Stanford women’s basketball Twitter account posted: “Scan clear. Anna is okay and will be with the team on the flight home.”

Forward Alanna Smith led the Cardinal (6-0) with 30 points. Forward Kenna Woodfolk scored 16 for the Rainbow Wahine (1-7).
