Senior Jonathan Janssen tallied 22 points and eight rebounds to help Hawaii Pacific beat Oakland City 74-53 on Tuesday at Moanalua High School.
Both junior Neema Namdar and senior Darnell Bettis scored 11 points for the Sharks. Tyler Toopes scored 19 points and had nine rebounds for the Mighty Oaks as Oakland City dropped to 1-1 and HPU improved to 1-1.
Chaminade women’s hoops suffers first loss
Senior forward Hunter Liftee scored 16 points and senior guard Diamond Carter added 14, but it was not enough as the Chaminade women’s basketball team dropped its regular-season opener to Saint Thomas Aquinas 64-51 in the Oahu Thanksgiving Classic at Saint Francis Gym.
Julie Winnik came off the bench for a game-high 20 points, hitting six 3-pointers, for the Spartans (4-1). The Silverswords (0-1) face Minot State (N.D.) today at Saint Francis and conclude the tournament against Northwestern Oklahoma State on Friday at McCabe Gym.
Isle tennis team takes second at nationals
Honolulu lost to Memphis 2-1 to finish second at the USTA League Mixed 40-over 7.0 National Championships last weekend in Orlando, Fla.
The Hawaii Pacific Section representive advanced with a 2-1 semifinal victory over Puerto Rico at the USTA National Campus. Members of the team, captained by Avis Tamura and Lori Loo, included Rie Kodama, William Churchill, Steven Adachi, Kelsey Matsu, Steven Bailey and Donald Geil, as well as Mary Ann Esteban, Atsuko Sato, Jeremy McQuat, Suzanne Kariya-Ramos, Michael Denny, Stephanie Tsuzaki and Ryan Yamasaki.
